JonsTube now opens on a random Short and launches the JonsTube Lab, 100 experiments built on 10,000+ videos
JonsTube, the personal video site of Pittsburgh creator Jonathan Harchick, today launched two updates: a homepage that opens directly on a random Short, and the JonsTube Lab, a collection of 100 experiments built on the site's catalog of more than 10,000 videos.
A homepage that starts with a Short
Visitors to jonstube.com now land on a random Short instead of a grid. The homepage draws from the same 114 Shorts that run on Jon's sister sites, JonTok and InstaJon, and each Short shows where else it appears. Viewers can step forward and back, jump to a random pick, or browse all 114 Shorts. The full video grid, with every channel and show, has moved to jonstube.com/home.
The JonsTube Lab: 100 experiments, all live
The JonsTube Lab at jonstube.com/lab collects 100 experiments that run on real catalog data, in the viewer's browser. All 100 are live: 67 are fully built and 33 are partial, and every partial experiment explains on the Lab page what is still in progress and why. Highlights include an Advent calendar, a weather reactive homepage, lo fi radio mode, a daily upload heatmap, Time Machine, TV mode with a scheduled broadcast, games such as Higher or Lower and an archive jigsaw, copy and paste embed widgets, open data downloads in JSON, CSV and SQLite, and a free read only public API at jonstube.com/api/v1.
Built on a decade and a half of videos
JonsTube gathers Jonathan Harchick's five channels in one place: Jon Drinks Water, with 9,214 episodes and 713 Shorts, plus Let's Tape It, Jon Eats Carrots, Tech Thursday and YouTube Remix, along with Shorts and the Talking With Jon series. The newest numbered water episode on the site is Jon Drinks Water #10030. The site runs no ads, requires no account and does no tracking of its own; history, likes and playlists stay in the viewer's own browser.
Availability
The new homepage and the JonsTube Lab are live now at jonstube.com and jonstube.com/lab. The regular video grid is at jonstube.com/home. JonsTube is free to use.
